This week a Bible inside a car only had its edges burned while the vehicle was completely charred to ruin, we hear numerous stories like this every year which are a testament to the enduring power of God’s word.
“And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed.”
We’ve all heard the story in Exodus 3 of Moses and the burning bush on the mountain of God. It was also featured in the epic film the Ten Commandments. The Bible tells us that Moses was amazed by what he saw, a bush on fire, yet not burning up.
Similar unexplainable “miracles” happen all the time with the book of God’s word: The holy Bible.
The Bible tells us that God and his word are both fire.
“Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”
“For our God is a consuming fire.”
Perhaps these miracles occur as kind of a “fight fire with fire” kind of protection that God’s fire keeps the surrounding fire from consuming his printed word. Whatever the cause, here are some amazing stories of Bibles inexplicably surviving infernos of flame while everything else around them are engulfed and charred to ruin.
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”
– Matthew 24:35
Raleigh, North Carolina: According to beliefs, a Jeep caught fire at an apartment complex along Platte Crossing in the Brier Creek area around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, as reported by WRAL. There was a mechanical issue that caused the fire, and the driver was able to escape. But almost the entire interior of the car was burned or melting away, and even the front of the vehicle was reduced to ashes. However, there was one exception: a Bible that was on the dashboard. While the edges of the pages were burned, the entire Bible itself remained intact and readable.
Peshtigo, Wisconsin: On October 8, 1871, a fire engulfed the entire small town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, leaving the town as if it had never been there. The area was a lumber boomtown in America’s dairyland. In the end, the fire ravaged 2,400 square miles, an area equivalent to the size of Delaware. It was the nation’s deadliest fire, WTSP reported. One reason this fire isn’t known grader to history is that it occurred on the exact same night of the Great Chicago Fire, which stole headlines.
One of the most amazing findings in the aftermath was a tabernacle that had survived the inferno on which a Bible was found that had been charred and petrified by the intense heat, however, it was still intact and was open to Psalms 106 and 107 that begins with: “Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!”
Wisconsin: A Bible that is 150 years old survived two separate church fires in two separate locations. The first occurred during the 1950s when the Bible was housed at the original St. Paul’s Church in downtown Stevens Point, ABC reported. Then on Tuesday, March 18, 2019, the Bible was housed at the Springs United Methodist Church in Plover, which erupted into an inferno. The entire building was gutted, while much of its brick exterior remained standing. Cleaning up in the debris afterward, the century-and-a-half-old Bible was found intact.
Numerous headlines tell the other stories. The instances of Bibles surviving fire go on and on. There are so many of the stories, they are impossible to ignore or hand over to luck or chance. The Bible survived when everything around them is completely destroyed or melted.
And the list goes on and on.
“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.”
