Are China and Russia Gog and Magog?

Gog and Magog are part of apocalypse prophecy that are found in Ezekiel 38-39 and Revelation 20.

And although these prophecies may not refer to literal geography, many scholars conclude that Gog and Magog refer to either China and Russia, or perhaps an alliance of both, as we also have to consider that Magog may not be a single country, but an alliance.

Therefore, the alignment of Russia and China could fit into prophecies found in Scripture, and these two countries could be Magog.

Let’s take a look at Scripture and find out what it tells us about Gog and Magog.

Prophecy from Ezekiel 38-39

First off, Gog is a figure, while Magog is a nation with a huge army.

Ezekiel tells us about an invasion of “Gog, of the land of Magog.” He goes on to say that Gog will come from “the heights of the north” (Ezekiel 38:15-16; 39:2).

In terms of how ancient readers would have interpreted this, they would have anticipated an invasion from the north. Many scholars have also focused on the literal geographic aspect of this phrase.

Further on, will look at how this came to be assumed as China and/or Russia.

Prophecy from Revelation 20

“When the thousand years are complete, Satan will be released from his prison, 8and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to assemble them for battle. Their number is like the sand of the seashore.”

– Revelation 20:7-8

Supernatural aspect of Gog and Magog

There is another context which should be considered in these prophecies, and that is the supernatural context. There are definite connections with Gog and the Canaanite religion with Baal, lord of the dead.

Baal, aka Bel, and eventually became Baal Zebul. He was referred to by Jesus Christ himself as Beelzebub (Luke 11:19; Matthew 12:24-27). Baal also thought of as the equivalent of the god Baphomet, and thus: Satan. In fact, our modern understanding of the image of Satan is that of Baphomet.

What do we know about Russia and China and this prophecy?

We know that the invading nation will have an enormous army and will come from the north. Check.

We know that the invading northern nation will be the antichrist, that is atheist. Check.

What army on earth that could put together a force where, as Revelation 20: 8 says: “their number is like the sand of the seashore,” other than China and Russia? China for sure, and of course, if they combined forces that would guarantee the world’s largest army. Check.

China and Russia alliance

After years of friction between Russia and China, something happened that no one ever expected. On April 3, 2018, a diplomacy pact between China and Russia came to fruition.

Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe traveled to Russia as the special envoy of Paramount Leader Xi Jinping for the Moscow International Security Conference. Only two days earlier, Russia and China also announced a plan to merge their satellite tracking systems into a single global monitoring system.

“First, I am visiting Russia as a new defense minister of China to show the world a high level of development of our bilateral relations and firm determination of our armed forces to strengthen cooperation,” Wei said.

“I am visiting Russia as a new defense minister of China to show the world a high level of development of our bilateral relations and firm determination of our armed forces to strengthen cooperation.”

As a result, Moscow delivered China a shipment of a regiment’s worth of S-400 surface-to-air missile systems.

Ironically, Herbert W. Armstrong predicted such an alliance back in the June-July 1934 issue of Plain Truth magazine. At that time, no one took Armstrong seriously. There was severe friction between the two countries. But times change. And God sees the end from the beginning.

What would Satan do?

So if we ask the question: What would Satan do? We would probably agree that Satan would do what is happening right now in both Russia and China: Eliminate religion. Satan’s goal is to wipe out the followers of God and place himself above God. That five “I will” statements of Satan found in Isaiah:13-14.

You only need to check the latest headlines about China and Russia between now and the two previous years, and you’ll see that both nations have stepped up their efforts to eliminate religion from their societies and have increased their persecution toward Christians and Muslims.

Russia and China are wiping out religious liberty

China is atheist, ramping up religious persecution

According to the US Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is officially atheist. And although Article 36 of the Chinese Constitution says its citizens “enjoy the freedom of religious belief,” and practice that simply isn’t true. China has been increasing it’s down on Tibetan Buddhist monks, Taoists, Christians and Muslims in particular.

According to a May 2018 US State Department report, many religious believers – Christian and Muslim – are unfairly being deemed as “extremists,” and being placed in re-education camps or are placed under forced surveillance and security. Some are being deported.

Russia taking harsh measures against religion

Not only is Russia cracking down on religion in their own country, but Moscow is trying to wipe out religious liberty in neighboring Ukraine.

Russia has been completely banning Jehovah’s Witnesses – arresting imprisoning, torturing and confiscating church property to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. They are also deporting Mormons.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has rated Russia as being a tier-1 persecutor, which warrants treatment as a “country of particular concern.”
