Metatron is described as “The King of Angels” in the Zohar, which is the holy book for the mystical branch of Judaism called Kabbalah.

Metatron is an archangel said to rule “over the tree of knowledge of good and evil” (Zohar 49, Ki Tetze: 28:138).

According to the Zohar, the Old Testament Jewish prophet Enoch started life on earth as a human being but has turned into the archangel Metatron in heaven (Zohar 43, Balak 6:86).

This is of particular note because in both the Torah and the Bible, the prophet Enoch is taken up to heaven without dying.

“So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.”

– Genesis 5:23-24

Differing translations of the Bible have translated the phrase “he was not” as: Disappeared, was there no longer, was gone, seen no more, or was no more.

The Jerusalem Targum version of the Torah translates the passage of Genesis 5:24 differently, as: “Enoch ascended into heaven through the Word of God, and God called him Metatron, the great scribe.”

In the New Testament book of Hebrews, it plainly states that Enoch was taken up to heaven without experiencing death.

“By faith, Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.”

– Hebrews 11:5

Various translations list it as: Taken up to heaven without dying, would not see death, should not see death, did not see death, without experiencing death, did not taste death, taking instead of dying, not to see death.

Metatron records the book of life

Metatron is also the official record keeper in heaven for recording all the activities of the lives of human beings on earth. Metatron keeps records on everything that has happened on earth in the past, that is happening in the present and that will happen in the future. These celestial records are referred to as the book of life or as Akashic records.

Other roles of Metatron

Metatron is seen as the patron angel of children. The Zohar states that it was the angel Metatron who led the Hebrew people through the wilderness for 40 years.

Some Jewish believers regard Metatron as a “death Angel” who helps escort the souls of the deceased from Earth into the afterlife.

In the belief of sacred geometry, “Metatron’s cube” is referred to as a shape that contains every shape that exists in the universe as part of God’s creation which are all the building blocks of physical matter. Metatron overseas this and helps direct and order the flow of all creative energy. Metatron sends this energy toward all parts of God’s creation. Metatron helps creates proper balance and harmony.

Further, it is believed that God speaks to us through sacred geometry in our dreams, and the shapes that we see in our dreams are representative of messages God is trying to communicate to us.
