Today’s Verse: 7 Ways the Bible Defines Christian Marriage

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

– Genesis 2:24

It is God’s will that human beings get married, have families and stay committed to one another. Here are seven ways in which the Bible defines marriage through several Bible verses about marriage.

1. God wants people to marry

“He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.”

– Proverbs 18:22

2. Mutual respect, humility and submission

“However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.”

– Ephesians 5:33

“Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.”

– Colossians 3:18-19

“With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

– Ephesians 4:2-3

3. Lifelong commitment

“Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun.”

– Ecclesiastes 9:9

“Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”

– Colossians 3:13

4. Marriage is between a man and woman

Jesus said:

“But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. “

– Mark 10:6-8

5. Divorce permitted only due to adultery

Jesus said:

“What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

– Mark 10:9

“But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.”

– Matthew 5:32

6. Providing sex to one another

“The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband.”

– 1 Corinthians 7:3

“But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.”

– 1 Corinthians 7:2

7. To create a family

“Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease.”

– Jeremiah 29:6

“And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'”

– Genesis 1:28
